UK Government Releases Landmark AI Adoption Research: What UK Businesses Need to Know in 2026
The UK Government has released its most comprehensive study to date on how businesses across the country are adopting artificial intelligence, and the findings reveal a landscape full of opportunity but marked by significant gaps in readiness. The research, commissioned by the Department for Science, Innovation & Technology (DSIT) and conducted by IFF Research and Technopolis Group, shows that while AI is delivering measurable benefits for the organisations that use it, overall adoption remains modest and uneven across sectors.
According to the report, only around one in six UK businesses currently use AI, and a further five percent plan to adopt it in the future. This means that roughly eighty percent of organisations neither use nor intend to use AI at present. Yet among those that have embraced AI, the benefits are striking. Three‑quarters of adopters report increased workforce productivity, and more than half say that AI has improved their processes and operations. These findings highlight a clear divide between organisations that have taken the leap and those that remain hesitant or unaware of the potential value AI can bring.
The research identifies several key barriers that continue to hold businesses back. One of the most significant is the perception that AI is simply not relevant to their operations. More than half of surveyed organisations believe that AI does not apply to their work, suggesting a widespread lack of understanding about the practical applications of AI across different industries. In addition to this perception gap, many businesses cite limited internal expertise, uncertainty about ethical and regulatory considerations, and concerns about data security and reliability as reasons for delaying adoption. These challenges point to a national readiness issue rather than a technological one.
The study also reveals substantial variation in adoption across sectors. Industries such as information and communication, finance, and business services show higher levels of AI integration, while sectors like construction, retail, transport, and hospitality lag significantly behind. This uneven distribution suggests that many industries risk falling behind as AI becomes increasingly central to competitiveness and innovation.
Among the organisations that do use AI, natural language technologies dominate. A large majority rely on tools for text generation, summarisation, and language processing, reflecting the rapid rise of accessible generative AI platforms. Computer vision, machine learning models, and agentic AI systems are used far less frequently, indicating that many businesses are still in the early stages of exploring more advanced or specialised AI capabilities.
Despite the growing availability of AI tools, the research shows that human oversight remains essential. Most organisations apply significant human review to AI outputs, and only a very small minority rely on AI without human intervention. This reinforces the importance of trustworthy, deterministic, and auditable AI systems—an area where Blake AI’s approach is particularly aligned with national needs.
