Why We're Raising £1.5M to Build the Deterministic AI Layer for Defence and Healthcare

Today we're opening our Seed Round: £1.5M to take Blake AI's deterministic physics engine from R&D to pilot stage across UK and EU defence and healthcare markets. Here's the thinking behind it - the problem, the bet we're making, and where the money goes.


The Problem We Keep Running Into
Most AI in production today is probabilistic. Large language models, most modern machine learning systems - they produce a statistically likely answer, not a guaranteed one. For a huge range of applications, that's completely fine. A chatbot that's 95% confident is a good chatbot.
But there's a class of decisions where "probably correct" isn't an acceptable standard:

A clinical decision support tool flagging a patient at risk
A defence system identifying a target or threat
An industrial control system managing a safety-critical process

In these domains, regulators, clinicians, and procurement teams don't just want a good answer, they want to know why the system reached that answer, and they want it to reach the same answer given the same inputs, every time. That's not a feature you can bolt onto a probabilistic model after the fact. It has to be built into the architecture from the start.
That gap - between what most AI vendors can offer and what high-stakes industries actually require, is what Blake AI exists to close.


What We've Built
Blake AI's core engine is deterministic and physics-grounded rather than probabilistic. In practice, that means our systems produce repeatable, explainable outputs by construction - not through an explainability layer added on top of a black-box model.


Two arms bring this to market:
VRU handles the IP layer: the deterministic physics models, digital twin simulation, and detection systems.
VRGO handles real-world delivery: consultancy, hardware integration, and deployment into client environments.

This split matters commercially as much as technically. It means Blake AI isn't choosing between being a software company or a services company, we can license the core IP through VRU while also generating consultancy revenue through VRGO, from the same underlying technology.


Why This Market, Why Now
We didn't pick defence and healthcare arbitrarily. Both sectors are under real pressure to adopt AI, and both have structural reasons why probabilistic AI alone won't get them there:

The global AI in Aerospace & Defense market is projected to grow from £19.4B in 2024 to £34.0B by 2030 (Grand View Research).
The global AI in Healthcare market is projected to reach £148.3B by 2030 (Grand View Research).
More specifically, the Explainable AI market, the category Blake AI competes in directly is projected to grow from £6.15B in 2024 to £16.63B by 2030, an 18% CAGR (Grand View Research).

Regulatory pressure is also moving in our favour. Governments and industry bodies are increasingly mandating explainability and auditability for AI used in high-stakes decisions, particularly in healthcare and defence procurement. That's not a trend we're betting against, it's a trend we're built around.


Where We Are Today
We want to be straightforward about stage: Blake AI is pre-pilot and R&D-focused right now. Our strength today is technical and scientific credibility, not commercial scale, and that's exactly what this raise is for.
That credibility includes peer-reviewed research published in Nature, and over a decade of R&D spanning biomedicine, physics, and simulation engineering. It's a foundation that's difficult to build quickly, and it's the basis for everything we're building at Blake AI now.


What the £1.5M Does
This is an 18-month plan to move from R&D to pilot stage:

45% - R&D & Engineering: completing the deterministic physics engine, the digital twin visualisation layer, and live sensor/data integration
20% - Pilot Delivery: funding our first UK/EU design partner pilots in defence and healthcare, including on-site integration via VRGO
10% - Compute & Infrastructure: hardware, cloud/edge compute, and lab equipment needed to validate physics models at scale
10% - IP, Regulatory & Compliance: patent filing, UK/EU regulatory groundwork, and security accreditation relevant to defence and healthcare procurement
8% - Business Development: building relationships with UK/EU defence and healthcare procurement contacts and pilot partners
7% - Operations & Legal: company structuring across VRU and VRGO, and legal/accounting costs tied to the raise

The bulk of this is deliberately weighted toward R&D, because that's where we are: getting the engine to a state where a design partner can run a real pilot, not a demo.


Who We're Looking to Work With
We're opening this raise to angels, VCs, and other funding bodies with an interest in deep tech, R&D-stage investment, defence tech, healthtech, or explainable/deterministic AI specifically. UK and EU opportunities are particularly welcome, given where our early pilot conversations are likely to take shape.
